This project is driven by Gawie van Niekerk and his skilled handymen. They take in between 10 and 15 young primary school boys every quarter and teach them the art/skill of working with wood.
These boys also experience the feeling of belonging, and they physically create something for themselves and their families. The products they make are also sold at the farmers’ market.
Their Goal
The primary goal is to teach the art of wood work and the necessary skills to young boys in the Danville and Elandspoort area. They learn how to craft items from pieces of wood that they can use personally or sell. These boys stand proudly, showcasing their handiwork after each project. The aim is to expand this opportunity to more boys.
Boys in this community often lack a paternal figure in their lives for various reasons. Wood work provides these boys with a space to learn, experience boyhood, and receive support.
